The One Sentence Every Leader Should Be Able to Say

If you had to sum up your leadership in one sentence… could you?

Most can’t. Here, give it a try: 🟡 “As a leader, I’m here to ________ so that ________.”

This could sound like:
“I’m here to develop others so they feel confident owning their voice.”
“I lead to create inclusive spaces where people feel safe to be bold.”
“I’m here to challenge the status quo so that innovation can thrive.”

When you know why you lead, everything changes.
✅ Your decisions have more clarity
✅ Your team knows what to expect from you
✅ And you stop trying to lead like someone you’re not

If you’re ready to uncover your own leadership purpose, here’s where to start:

1. Reflect on Your Peak Leadership Moments

Think back to times when you felt most alive, proud, or aligned in your role.
Ask yourself:
🔹 When have I felt like my leadership truly mattered?
🔹 Who was I helping, and what was the impact?
🔹 What values were being honoured in those moments?

Patterns in these stories often reveal your deeper purpose.

2. Identify the Difference You Want to Make

Your purpose lives at the intersection of:
❤️ What you care about
💪 What you're good at
🌍 What the world needs from you

Ask yourself:
🔸 What frustrates or energizes me at work—and why?
🔸 What do people often come to me for?
🔸 If I could change one thing about my workplace or industry, what would it be?

This shift, from doing a job to serving a mission, makes all the difference.

3. Write a Purpose Draft

Don’t worry about making it sound polished. Make it feel true.

Try it again: 🟡 “As a leader, I’m here to ________ so that ________.”

So… how would you complete that sentence?
